Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Super Cup in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last thirteen years.
