The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
