Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
