2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Mixed Reception

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer noted that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

Trend of Key Hires

The news mirrors a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.

The player input from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the necessity for a clearer brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to heart and revamped the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our audience.

Our confidence in this project grows every day. To further the incredible development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. After several months of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most popular franchises in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Then, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the category."
